East Devon MP, Hugo Swire, visited St John’s International School is Sidmouth on Friday to answer questions from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils on his role as MP and Minister of State.
The visit came about after St John’s pupil Joseph Fox wrote to Mr Swire, asking him to visit the school as his class were doing a project on world leaders and governments.
Mr Swire spent 40 minutes answering the children’s questions, which ranged from the Iraq war to animal welfare to the EU referendum. The MP was then given a short tour of the school by a small group of pupils.
Following the visit, Mr Swire said:
‘It was great to visit St John’s again and I am very grateful to Joseph for inviting me. I was thoroughly impressed by the children’s passion for politics which was clear from their excellent questions’.
A Year 6 pupil from the school said:
‘We asked many questions on current issues such as the EU, Trident and the American election. After some very hard quizzing we had a photo and Mr. Swire had an interesting tour.
‘We all had a very enjoyable afternoon learning about Parliament and many other things’.
